Perhaps the most famous member of the US Navy is often seen in their white service uniforms. The iconic navy silhouette – featuring bell bottoms and a wide collar shirt with a crew neck – is colored mostly white and predominantly blue, earning the uniform the nickname "crackerjacks" after the iconic snack box with the same name. The round white lid for each is known as a "dixie cup," a nickname said to likely come from its similarity in appearance to the popular paper ice cream cup.

You may also notice US Navy officers and Chief Petty Officers (CPOs) wearing their own service white dress, which is reserved for warm weather and has a stand-up tunic with white trousers, white shoes and a white combination cap. Uniformed officers wear shoulder epaulettes (shoulder plates) while CPOs wear metal collar anchors.

The U.S. The Marine Corps is a division of the Navy — and as such there's quite a bit of naval power on the West Side this week. Although their navy blue uniform (with navy collar, white shirt and sky blue trousers) is perhaps the most recognizable (and often appears in recruitment advertisements), it is the civilian equivalent of "black tie" and is reserved for for formal occasions only.

Many city sailors wear a more casual variation of the Blue Dress uniform - a 'C' or 'D' uniform consisting of a khaki shirt (C=long sleeve, D=short sleeve), sky blue trousers and a white cap. Officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) wear a scarlet leg stripe, the width of which indicates their rank: 2″ stripe for general officers, 1.5″ stripe for field and company officers, and 1.125″ stripe for NCOs.

Coast Guard officers wear a uniform very similar to the white dress uniform of the United States Naval Service, except for service-specific buttons, insignia, and sword designs.

And while some of the uniforms—namely the "crackerjack" Navy Dress Whites—may look dated, that's because they are. Jessica Williams, curator of history and collections at the W47th's Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, explained that today's uniform is similar to what the crew wore back then

Services and now that the Navy has tried to turn the Marine uniform into something more than a tucked-in shirt and tie, but the Marines have had a deep connection to the traditional uniform," he said. "It's iconic – so the original design didn't go and they went back to what we see today. The uniforms they wear

Some sailors even choose to enlist based on the iconic uniform, Williams added: "We've talked to a lot of ex-crew about why they joined the Navy, and people have different reasons - but there are a few who say, 'You know, it was a uniform." They imagine themselves wearing that uniform. And they see it as sharp and really meant for the navy. The classic 'crackerjack' uniform really has an appeal."

In addition to being visible in the neighborhood, military uniforms have another important connection to the West Side. Some military uniforms, all of which must be made in the USA from American materials, are made right here in the Garment District at W36. Goldatech, a company founded by independent fashion designers Rachel Rothenberg-Saenz, Alexandra Baylis and Amy Tiefermann, who met while working for Oscar De La Renta, originally set out to produce high-quality, reusable and disinfectable PPE in response to the first wave of so- called The covid19 pandemic. As demand for PPE has slowed, the startup has won contracts to work for the military, including the Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force.

While some aspects of the uniforms remain unchanged, other design elements have recently been updated. Previous options for women's service uniforms were either completely different dress designs or the same dress originally designed for men, in 2017 the Navy expanded to include newly redesigned options for female services as well as maternity uniforms and Goldatech is leading the production.

"Everyone feels it's more useful than high-end design," explained Catie Savage, co-author of the article, who was a former pattern designer at Ralph Lauren and now helps create the uniform. "Being responsible for making sure the men and women in the armed forces have well-fitting, well-made garments is really great."

Thanks to the hardworking team at Goldatech and uniform manufacturers across the country, service members in New York look their sharpest. You can see for yourself if you tour the USS Bataan as part of the Fleet Week celebration. And if you see an outfit you can't identify - chances are British Royal Navy personnel from HMS Protector are arriving for Fleet Week from patrolling the Arctic and Antarctic!
